How reliable are our reference books and the internet? Do we just trust that the information we find is correct? The triangle method is a good idea when we are researching. Check in three places (3 points of a triangle) if the information is the same in all 3 places it is more than likely correct. This is some information I found about when gold was discovered in Otago by Gabriel Read. I found it in Awesome Aotearoa, by Margaret Mahy. Is this information correct and accurate? Can you prove it? there are stars and week off homework stickers available for good research and answers.

On 23 May 1861, in a gully that still bears his name. Gabriel Read discovered Gold. 'Shining like the sters of Orion on a frosty night' he said. It was a discovery revealing a potential gold rush in Otago.

On 23 May 1861, after shoveling more than a metre of gravel, Gabriel Read found gold. 'Shinning like the stars of orion on a dark, frosty night.'

On 23 May 1861. Read made an incredible discovery, in his excitement he said 'I saw the Gold shining like the stars of Orion on a dark, frosty night'
This is what three websites that I found said, but I did not find 1 website that said he was offered a sum of 500 pounds if he found some gold.

Gold was discovered in Otago by Gabriel Read.He did not keep the discovery to himself though but instead mentioned it to the Otago regional council. The publics reaction was was fast and frantic. Over time people came from mostly Asia and Australia to get as much gold as possible and then return to there home country. If they did not collect enough gold to head back they went to Dunedin to start a business.
